A Loving Command in a Hostile World

Many of the hymns we sing this morning point to the eternal, unchanging nature of God (“Him who is from the beginning,” 1 John 2:14). We declare that “Our God forever shall abide” (Within Your Temple, Lord—Psalm 48) and that His grace “never fails from age to age” (Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken). We are grateful that He “changest not” (Great Is Thy Faithfulness), and we have confidence that the God who is the “Ancient of Days” will also reign forever with us in His Kingdom of light (The God Of Abraham Praise). The remaining hymns respond to an unchanging God by looking to His eternal commandment of love—which is both “new” (John 13:34) and “old” (1 John 2:7). We pray that the Lord will “teach us how to love each other” (Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee), and encourage one another to “keep His ways unswerving” (If Thou But Suffer God To Guide Thee). We do not trust in chariots or horses, but in the God who promises to answer, “whenever we call” (The Lord Ever Hear You—Psalm 20). —Henry C. Haffner
