Matthew 26 [1] When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, [2] "You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." [3] Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, [4] and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. [5] But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people." [6] Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, [7] a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. [8] And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? [9] For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor." [10] But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. [11] For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. [12] In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. [13] Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her." [14] Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests [15] and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. [16] And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. [17] Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?" [18] He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'" [19] And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. [20] When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. [21] And as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." [22] And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?" [23] He answered, "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. [24] The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." [25] Judas, who would betray him, answered, "Is it I, Rabbi?" He said to him, "You have said so." [26] Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." [27] And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, [28] for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. [29] I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." [30] And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. [31] Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' [32] But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee." [33] Peter answered him, "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away." [34] Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." [35] Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!" And all the disciples said the same. [36] Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray." [37] And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. [38] Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me." [39] And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." [40] And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour? [41] Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." [42] Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done." [43] And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. [44] So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. [45] Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. [46] Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand." [47] While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. [48] Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I will kiss is the man; seize him." [49] And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" And he kissed him. [50] Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you came to do." Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. [51] And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. [52] Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. [53] Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? [54] But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?" [55] At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. [56] But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him and fled. [57] Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. [58] And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. [59] Now the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, [60] but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward [61] and said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.'" [62] And the high priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?" [63] But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." [64] Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." [65] Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. [66] What is your judgment?" They answered, "He deserves death." [67] Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, [68] saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?" [69] Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean." [70] But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean." [71] And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." [72] And again he denied it with an oath: "I do not know the man." [73] After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you." [74] Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately the rooster crowed. [75] And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly. John 18 [1] When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. [2] Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. [3] So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. [4] Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" [5] They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. [6] When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. [7] So he asked them again, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." [8] Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go." [9] This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: "Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one." [10] Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) [11] So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?" [12] So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. [13] First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. [14] It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. [15] Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest, [16] but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. [17] The servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not." [18] Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. [19] The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. [20] Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. [21] Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said." [22] When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, "Is that how you answer the high priest?" [23] Jesus answered him, "If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?" [24] Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. [25] Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "You also are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not." [26] One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?" [27] Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. [28] Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. [29] So Pilate went outside to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?" [30] They answered him, "If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you." [31] Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death." [32] This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. [33] So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" [34] Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?" [35] Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?" [36] Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world." [37] Then Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world--to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." [38] Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, "I find no guilt in him. [39] But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" [40] They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.

She just lights up as soon as this room fills with music. It's a beautiful thing.

All right, last week we covered from *Pastors and Their Critics*, he kind of outlined starting in the Old Testament, a theology of criticism, and he focused primarily on the criticism of three different types of people. We had a prophet, a priest, and a king. Each of those were heavily criticized in the Old Testament, and he opened with a really interesting section on the first person criticized in the Bible. Do y'all remember who is the first person criticized in the Bible? It was God. That's right. So after God had done nothing except create the heavens and the earth, and every day the refrain is, and God saw that it was good, and God saw that it was good. He looked at it all together. It was very good. And then the first thing that someone says about this good God was, has God really said that you can't eat from any tree in the garden? And then the subtext, the question behind the question was, God is really stingy. Can you trust him? And then the second question, it was no longer a question. It was just an outright calling God a liar. You will not surely die because God knows that the day you eat of this fruit you will become like god which is ironic because the only thing we do about humanity at that point was that they were made like god in his image but the criticism was god is stingy and you cannot trust him so that's the first criticism so as you experience criticism you are in good company and the lord you can fellowship with the lord as you experience criticism what were some other criticisms from the old testament i remember what were some people who were criticized Job was heavily criticized by his friends we have about 40 chapters about 38 chapters of Job being criticized by his friends saying Job just tell us what sin did you commit and then the Lord ends up rebuking his friends and Job has to pray for them who else was criticized Moses was criticized over and over and over again the refrain of the the wanderings in the wilderness was basically Moses, why do you hate us? Why did you bring us here to die? Why do you never give us any food? And we hate this worthless bread. Wait, which was it? Does he never feed you or does he give you bread from heaven all the time and you're sick of eating this angel's food that tastes like wafers and honey? And so Moses was criticized a lot, many times. Who else? David was criticized and we looked at one of the criticisms from his enemy named Shammai who was from the house of Saul and it was after he had committed adultery murdered Uriah Absalom was revolting and Shammai's criticism was it true or false do y'all remember it was false I was like you had easy pickings you didn't I mean you didn't have to go very far to criticize David at this point in his life and he picked the one thing that David didn't do which was why did you all the blood of the house of Saul is on your hands. And that's the one thing David hadn't done at that point. And do you remember, how did David respond to that criticism? He took it. And his friend said, David, you want me to go cut off his head? He's criticizing the king. This is treason. And David said, no, let him alone. This is from the Lord. And I'm going to appeal to God. Maybe he'll bring me back. Maybe he won't. But I have sinned against the Lord and I'm going to take whatever the lord brings my way let him curse all right pretty extreme there um one other was nehemiah there's a heavy criticism that's actually one of the themes of the book of nehemiah they're trying to rebuild the city of jerusalem rebuild the temple and their enemies come and the first thing the enemies do is say hey nice wall you've got there i hope a fox doesn't come and knock it over you know it's kind of embarrassing what you're doing and the first thing they do is they're just mocking them which is a very legitimate tactic of satan against the church it's mockery insults then he goes to the government tries to get the government to turn against nehemiah did that work they appealed to cyrus and cyrus said i'm not sure let's go dig through the records and they said oh we did actually commission you to rebuild jerusalem and we said we were going to give you more help i'm sorry here's some extra supplies to help you as you rebuild the city all right so we see criticism all through the old testament one of the things there's a reason for criticism now i want you to imagine if no one ever criticized you how would that go for your soul not good all right i think god gives us marriage and one of the great reasons of marriage is that we criticize each other in ways that no one else would ever call you out. And the Lord uses that to grow you. So as much as we hate criticism, as much as it is a furnace, God uses it for your holiness. And without criticism, you would be doing pretty poorly as a Christian. So I just want to start there. God uses criticism, whether it's good or bad, he's going to use it to grow you.

All right, today we're going to come to the New Testament and mostly look at Christ. And I really want to focus on Christ when he was under trial with Pilate and with the high priest and what Christ did in response to criticism. But there's a whole lot in the story of Jesus. Can you guys think of anything in the New Testament when, what were some ways in which Jesus was criticized? What were some criticisms lobbed against him? He was a glutton, a wine bibber, a friend of sinners. All he ever does is go out and party with the worst people in this city, right? That's how we think of Jesus, right? Not many people think of him that way, but he was criticized in his day because he was often going to eat with people who loved hard living, and he would go and he would eat with them another criticism healing on the sabbath of all the nerve what kind of an evil man must he have been when you had sick people coming to church and he healed them and didn't say come back on a different day bring your sickness some other time yeah he was criticized heavily for healing on the Sabbath. What were some other criticisms? A blasphemer. Yeah. Why was he was he called the blasphemer he called himself equal with god so in the days of jesus it wasn't it's not like scholars went back later and said you know we think jesus is actually god and they mythologized him this was a this was a pretty heavy movement in the early 1900s they wanted to demythologize jesus because the early church invented him as god but really he was just this great teacher in the bible and he was crucified so we need to go back to the original jesus who was not mythologized who really wasn't the son of god all right well that movement's ridiculous because in jesus's day they accused him of blasphemy he said you are making yourself equal with god and jesus never denied it but they accused him falsely of being a blasphemer what What are some other criticisms?
